Job Description

Position Summary:  

SDOP is seeking a full-time Community Organizer to help grow faith-rooted, grassroots leadership in North San Diego County. Organizers build relationships, identify and develop new leaders within congregations, and support them in taking collective action for justice. The ideal candidate is passionate about community, grounded in a sense of moral purpose, experienced in organizing, and able to work across diverse racial, ethnic, and faith backgrounds. This role centers on developing others, supporting local campaigns, and contributing to a team committed to building a more just and equitable San Diego. What You'll Be Doing: 

  • Building relationships with congregational leaders across a wide geography 
  • Conduct 15-20 one-on-one relational meetings each week to identify and develop emerging leaders
  • Build and support 5+ Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) within member congregations
  • Working with LOCs to set relational campaign goals, hold research meetings, define issues, and conduct public actions to resolve community concerns.
  • Recruit new congregations and build relationships with clergy and grassroots leaders, supporting them to grow and strengthen organizing teams. 
  • Leading voter engagement efforts in every major election
  • Building a dynamic power analysis of the city and region
  • Participate in and help lead local and regional training sessions and staff development.
  • Building and maintaining intentional, public relationships with partner and allied organizations, coalitions, and public officials.
  • Develop and conduct training on effective community organizing: leadership, power, research meetings, team building, turnout, power analysis, voter engagement, coalitions, structural racism, storytelling, one-to- ones, etc.
  • Train and support grassroots leaders in SDOPs collective campaign work, including preparing leaders for visits to advocate with elected officials, gathering signatures, and turning out their networks

  • Connects with and believes in SDOP's mission.
  • Prior experience in training, teaching or presentation 
  • Minimum 3+ years professional or volunteer experience in community organizing or related social change field 
  • Ability to work with diverse religious, racial and geographic communities 
  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined and flexible; able to work independently and on a team
  • Group facilitation skills; experience nurturing, managing, and guiding a team of people
  • Facility working with clergy and people of faith, in traditional and non-traditional spaces 
  • Cultural competence and emotional intelligence to support and nurture a culture of belonging in multi-racial and multi-faith spaces 
  • Strong interpersonal and relational skills 
  • Able to prioritize work and manage time effectively
  • Work non-traditional hours, including during the evening and on some weekends.
  • CA driver's license and access to a reliable automobile (with at minimum, liability insurance)
  • Familiarity and experience working on issues of housing, criminal justice or immigration
  • Fluency in Spanish or other language relevant to our organizing
  • Experience doing voter engagement, as well as canvassing, phone banking, and using PDI or other voter data systems

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • This is a full-time, salaried position.
  • The job includes regular evening work and some weekend work. The role requires frequent travel within San Diego County to meet with grassroots leaders, in addition to weekly staff meetings at our offices in downtown San Diego.
  • Salary is competitive for the region and based on experience and demonstrated capacities, in a range from $70,304 - $72,000. 
  • The benefits package includes Employer-paid medical, dental and life insurance, 401k with 5% employer contribution after 1 year, paid holidays, paid time off (vacation time, sick time, and personal days)
