The Art Therapist will provide therapeutic support to students with diverse learning needs, including those with emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and developmental challenges. This role involves using art therapy techniques to help students express themselves, process emotions, develop coping skills, and improve their overall well-being. The Art Therapist will work closely with educators, counselors, and other school staff to create a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes the emotional and social development of students in special education.
Therapeutic Art Sessions: Provide individual and group art therapy sessions for students with special needs, focusing on fostering emotional expression, communication, and coping skills through creative processes.
· Assessment and Evaluation: Conduct thorough assessments of students' emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning to tailor art therapy interventions and monitor progress.
· Collaboration with School Team: Work closely with teachers, special education staff, counselors, and administrators to develop individualized education plans (IEPs) and provide input on students' social and emotional development.
· Support for Behavioral and Emotional Needs: Help students develop self-regulation and coping strategies through art-based activities to address anxiety, trauma, anger management, and other emotional challenges.
· Develop and Implement Programs: Design and implement creative art projects that support the academic and social growth of students, using a range of media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital art.
· Student Monitoring and Reporting: Track students’ progress in therapy, keeping detailed records and providing periodic reports for meetings and reviews with parents and IEP teams.
· Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development and stay current on best practices in art therapy and special education.
Education: Master’s degree in art therapy or a related field (e.g., Psychology, Counseling) from an accredited program.
· Certification: Board Certification in Art Therapy (ATR) and/or Licensed Creative Arts Therapist (LCAT) or equivalent certification preferred.
· Experience: Experience working with students with disabilities
· Skills:
o Strong understanding of therapeutic art techniques and their application in working with diverse populations.
o Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
o Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.
